Spring 2013: The Do's and Don'ts of Makeup

Despite the snow and cold we have experienced in the last few weeks, spring is rapidly approaching and will be upon us before we know it. So with the approach of the season of rejuvenation and bloom, we should get to know the trends that are set to be massive in the makeup world.

Let’s work our way through the 2013 looks…

Skin

The skin is glowing this year. All catwalks were shining with life as all models looked fresh and vibrant. The best way to achieve such a look is by using light-reflecting primers, foundations or powders which will catch the light and shine it off your skin. This makeup also makes you look younger and rejuvenated but be careful not to look oily rather than glowing. The best course of action would be to use a light-reflective primer and then cover it with a liquid foundation to dull the effect a bit.

Lipsticks

Lipsticks are in the red spectrum this spring, with an accent on scarlet and crimson shades. Red is the all-time classic in the lipstick department and it doesn’t ever seem to go out of fashion, but it has been on the catwalks again for the approaching season. Many models were seen with a touch of orange too, making red a bit less ‘femme fatale’. If nothing of the red gamma suits you, you can wear anything you like – just be careful to keep everything in matte rather than covered with shiny lip gloss. After all, glowing skin is enough…

Eyeliners

Eyeliners are seen everywhere and are becoming more of a must with each passing season. Spring 2013 makes no exception as makeup artists really got stuck into experimenting on each model. Two looks emerged on top – the flicked up line and the tight but smudged outline of the entire eye. Both looks can be used for special occasions, but everyday makeup would benefit more from the smudged outline – it is a more elegant and classy day time look, so long as you keep the smudging to a minimum to avoid panda eyes.

Eye Shadows

The eye shadows are all in the green and blue gammas. And by all, you can read that any and all colours from those palettes can be used, depending on the desired look. Use their brightest versions for clubbing and their subtle versions for work; use matte for the everyday look and metallic for the night scene. Really, anything goes as long as it’s green or blue. Keep in mind that no models were seen wearing both shades at the same time – keep them separate.

Eyelashes

Eye lashes were also the object of experimentation on the catwalks – big, small, black, blue, pink, green, metallic… Most makeup artists focused on the lower lash and made it really stand out. Just keep in mind that mascara on the lower lash brings out dark circles so if you didn’t get your beauty sleep, don’t try for that look – neither you nor anyone around you will be pleased with the result.

Eyebrows

Last but not least – the brows. Everyone is carrying them heavy and with pride this year as most artists really put an accent on them. Don’t believe it if you wish, but ‘the bigger the better’ is spring 2013’s motto. Keep them nicely shaped, but put your eyebrow pencils at work because you really need them to stand out.

The Casual Look

Of course, the natural look is always on trend. Many models were seen without any makeup and if you can get away with it, it’s really the best choice… at least for the everyday, casual appearance.

If you are beginning to buy your makeup for the spring season, take into account these 2013 requirements and you will look like you just stepped off the cat walk.

  4. Interesting post... I tend to always go for the natural look unless a special event. But then again, I dress casual almost all the time too.
